Unexpected Snow – October 28, 2008 (Photos)

(Originally posted on the website Heron Flight)

Three days before Halloween and a week before Election Day, this was an unseasonably early and unexpected snowfall. The most striking thing about it was the number of trees still with Fall foliage. This also became the most inconvenient aspect of the day. The heavy wet snow caused many branches and whole trees to fall. Many roads were blocked and power lines were downed in many places. My journey home from work lasted nearly two hours. So, never one to be bored, I took photos! (The last four pictures are of the aftermath the day after the storm, just a few of the dozens of trees that were down on my route to work.)

The sport has a way of turning your world upside down. Practices at least three times a week. Games every weekend. (Five-year-olds need the intensity.) And poor communication to boot. Today we were halfway to the game that was 25 miles away when we got a call that it was canceled due to the rain. Are we playing tomorrow? Nobody knows yet. “Check your email later tonight.” So, all plans for tomorrow have to be put on hold until futher notice. Hopefully we actually get that notice.
